Things to Never do to a Computer or On a Computer

Computer "No-No's"

Never do this to a Computer

  • Never set up your computer on a closed shelf - Computers need ventilation and to move air.  Heat buildup will destroy your computer real fast.
  • Never plug in your computer into an outlet without a surge protector.  One small electrical shock can ruin your system.
  • Don't turn the computer off while you have any program open. Always close all programs, and then shut down your computer properly. Click here for instructions for closing a PC. Click here for instructions for closing a Mac.
  • On a PC, never remove a diskette from the floppy disk drive or a CD from the CD ROM drive when the light is on. Always wait until the light is off. On a Mac, drag the diskette to the Trash icon to remove it or choose Special > Eject or press Command + e.
  • Never turn a computer off and on without waiting at least 60 seconds.
  • Never use a magnet around a computer, monitor, or diskette. Note that telephones contain magnets.
  • Never force a diskette, ZIP disk, or CD-ROM into the drive.
  • No food or drink should be near the computer.
  • Turn the computer off before connecting new hardware, except for "hot-pluggable" devices that specifically say you can plug them in while the computer is on.
  • Never delete files or photos when you are angry - sometimes you can never get the stuff back.
