Spyware, (adware), (malware), is software that resides in your computer performing a wide variety of tasks. SPYING ON YOU! Spyware usually downloads and installs itself on your computer without your knowledge, running in the background, using up your computer’s resources, while remaining totally invisible. It can track your internet habits
plus any personal information that you’ve entered into your computer such as social security numbers, credit card numbers, passwords, addresses, etc.
The information collected is sent to a third party, unknown to you. Some programs can gain control over certain parts of your computer and reset your homepage to an alternate site, bombard you with multiple pop-up advertisements, and redirect internet searches using search their engines, not yours.
Spyware can be
installed on computers in many different ways, including Trojans which install them without the users permission; when visiting web pages with certain ActiveX controls or code that exploits certain vulnerabilities; shareware or freeware applications downloaded from the Internet, etc.
